SMART-1:
SMART-1 is the
European Space Agency's
first trip to the
Moon. The spacecraft's primary mission is to test new technologies, including an ion engine and minaturized electronics.
After a 16-month testing cruise, SMART-1 began a secondary mission to map and study the Moon in great detail. The orbiter will explore the darker regions of the Moon's south pole for the first
time and take a close look at the 'Peak of Eternal Light,' a lunar
mountain perpetually bathed in sunlight and surrounded by craters
never touched by light. The craters may contain ice.
