Psamathe

Psamathe
Date: 29 Aug 2003
These images show the discovery of the new Neptune satellite Psamathe (S/2003 N1) taken about 38 minutes apart with the Subaru 8.3 meter telescope atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

The motion of the satellite clearly stands out compared to the steady state background of stars and galaxies. Neptune is not in the field, but is about half a degree to the West of these images. Images on the right are the same as those on the left except that they have a red circle showing the location and movement of the new satellite.
